Body mass index chart for ideal weight (Source: Wikipedia) |
An ideal body weight is what is necessary to keep a person in complete shape and fitness. People of all genders and ages ask these questions to themselves, such as, what should my weight be, how much weight should I loose or gain, what if I am underweight or over weight, how actually can I get in good shape and so on. Before you move any further, you should know that there is no absolute measure of body weight that can be said as ideal. This is due to the difference in body structures, ethnicity and genes. Though body mass index is globally accepted as a standard against which ideal body weight is compared, it is not absolute. Instead, it is the right composition of body mass in different parts of body that matters the most.
What is body mass index (BMI)?
Body mass index can be defined as an individual’s body mass divided by the square of his or her height (Wikipedia). It does not measure the percentage of fat in the body. Rather, it is meant to convey an ideal body weight that an adult should have.
BMI is calculated as follows:
BMI = mass (Kg)/ (height (m))2
Ideal body mass index
Body mass index can be grouped under 4 categories,
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
What should I weigh for adults
There is a lot of variation among the ideal weights of adults of different areas of the world owing to ethnicity. Since, the populations of the world have merged to a great extent now, there is no rule of thumb to classify the weight one should have according to his country. However, the below given chart will surely help you find the ideal weight you should have. Slight variations do not matter as long as you have a healthy and fit body.

What should I weigh for children
For children and the infants, finding an ideal body weight is rather tricky because they are growing and do not correspond well to any standard measure. But this becomes a positive point when you realize that the more healthy upbringing is provided to a baby, the more fit and stout figure he or she is going to achieve. The weight of a child can easily be estimated using Leffler formula. This weight can be assumed as the ideal weight of a child.
For a baby of 0 to 1 year,
m = 1/2(am) + 4
And for children of 1 to 10 years of age it is,
m = 2ay + 10
Here, m
refers to the expected body weight and am and ay are the
age values in month and years respectively.
As said earlier, it should not worry you if your weight varies a bit from the ideal weight and you are doing well on the fitness front. Even if you gain muscles, you should gain it in the right areas of your body. Yes, if you have gathered access fat, you should surely be concerned. For that reason, refer this article, Cant loose weight: What to do. If you are underweight and looking to gain muscles, you will like this one: Ways to gain weight.
